The Fall Clean: Why Brits are embracing the seasonal refresh
As the leaves start to turn and the days grow shorter, many Brits are gearing up for what is increasingly becoming an annual tradition: the Fall Clean. While “fall” is an American term for “autumn”, the Fall Clean is growing in popularity across the UK.
With nearly 59% of people confirming that they undertake a deep clean of their homes in the autumn, similar to the traditional spring clean, Vypr has worked with eco-cleaning brand Seep to understand this trend.
Why do we embrace the Fall Clean?
Our survey reveals that the primary motivation for a deep clean in autumn is to prepare the home for the festive season. Over 21% of respondents indicated that getting the house ready for the festivities was their main reason. This is followed closely by 26% who view it as a way to mark the end of summer and to transition into the colder months. Interestingly, 13% of those surveyed use the Fall Clean as an opportunity to clear away summer items and bring out winter essentials.
Focus areas for the Fall Clean
When it comes to which rooms are the focus of this seasonal clean, the kitchen tops the list, with 54% of respondents indicating it as their primary area of attention. The lounge follows at 49%, reflecting the high-traffic nature of these spaces in the home.
What matters most in a Fall Clean?
Decluttering emerged as the top priority for 44% of those surveyed, highlighting a widespread desire to create a more organised and serene environment as the colder months approach. Other significant tasks include changing summer home furnishings for winter ones (11%) and cleaning windows (8%).
The Eco-Friendly Approach
Interestingly, while the desire for a clean home is strong, the survey also highlighted a gap in eco-friendly cleaning practices. Over 37% of respondents admitted they do not try to clean in an eco-friendly way. However, there is a growing awareness, with 29% of respondents indicating that they do use eco-friendly sprays, detergents, and cloths.
